Welcome to our first installment of Top Five Best Smartphones in India Series. To tell the truth I am really surprised what smartphones under 10000 rupees can offer. And a couple of years ago, the features which were seen only in high-end smartphones are now usual a feature-set in smartphones under 10000. Don’t you guys think the same?
And in price-sensitive country like India, people always search for best smartphones under 10000.
So without wasting any time. I’ll showcase the best smartphones which one can get under 10000 Rupees. But before I start let me tell that I have hand tested several devices and felt that these smartphones deserved to be in this list. I have even went across various online reviews and video reviews and thought of popular reviewer and what they have to say about the product. So what I’ve written here is the best piece of information one can find on the Internet.
So are you ready?
#5: Xolo Q700S
Xolo Q700S is the cutest looking smartphone under 10000 I’ve ever seen. Compared to its predecessor, the Xolo Q700 was bulky and looked like a black chunk bar phone. But Xolo Q700S is totally different. I’m really surprised what smartphone under 10000 rupees can offer.
Though Xolo Q700S’s the front is all black, the back is where all the magic happens. The Xolo Q700S comes in three different variants. Silver, Gold and Blue and only the back panels sports colors while no other difference. The back panel is complete plastic but has faux metallic finish to it, which still looks good for a smartphone under 10000 rupees.
The phone is sturdy and shows no signs of body panel squeaking whatsoever. The Xolo Q700S is a lot curvier on the edges and on the sides. This makes it very easy to hold.
Under the hood is a 1.3 GHz Quad Core Mediatek MT6582M chipset ticking inside. The RAM is 1GB whereas the internal storage is 4GB. It can even be expanded upto 32GB via SD Card. The screen size is however 4.5 inch with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels (218ppi). And you get Android 4.2.2 OS. The phone definitely scores respectable points in benchmark tests. You could even play some high end games with it. Though resource intensive applications can drain the battery a lot faster. But on normal use; its 1800mAh battery can last a day.
The primary camera is 8MP and secondary camera is VGA. The camera definitely clicks some good pictures; unless you don’t have steady hands. Even recording videos at 1080p resolution is fine with some good auto-focus. Thought don’t expect it to take highly detailed pictures or videos. But what you get isn’t complain-able at all. While I’ll leave upto you; what you think about the front camera. I’m not talking about it.
“All-in-all Xolo Q700S is an excellent pick compared to other smartphones under 10000 rupees as per my belief. Surely it wouldn’t disappoint first time smartphone users. The phone is sturdy and can take one or two drops with no damage. Has an excellent hardware control of Quad Core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8MP camera and 4GB internal storage. Xolo has promised to bring in Kitkat update which makes this an irresistible offer.”
Inside the Box: Xolo Q700S Handset, Charger, USB Cable, Earphones, User Manuals.
#4: XOLO Q800 X-Edition
Holding the Xolo Q800 X-Edition for the first time. One would definitely notice the Brand Name and X-Edition Embossed in Gold on the back panel. Even the built quality is best for this smartphone under 10000. Though the phone isn’t a looker. It looks just like every other crop of budget Android Smartphones.
For starters, Xolo Q800 X-Edition includes 1.2GHz Quad Core Mediatek MT6589 chipset along with 1GB RAM. And the GPU is PowerVR SGX544.
The internal storage is however 4GB and expandable upto 32GB. Even the battery is 2100mAh. Xolo Q800 X-Edition has 4.5 inch QHD display with a resolution of 960 X 540 pixels. Which provides decent pixel density of 245ppi. The phone is pretty lightweight at 143 grams and is easy to hold; unlike the 5+ inches phablets.
The primary camera is 8MP and can take decent photographs in proper lighting. Though still don’t expect it to rock low-light photography. While the secondary camera is 1MP and its good if we don’t talk about it (at all).
Xolo Q800 X-Edition comes with 4.5 inch screen. And it doesn’t include bloatware except the usual Google apps and Xolo Backup, Xolo Secure and Xolo Care (as if they really cared). This gives it an impressive battery life of little more than a day. The only disappointment would be the OS. Xolo Q800 X-Edition comes with Android 4.1.2 and no possibility of future updates. Duhh!
“Xolo Q800 X-Edition has an impressive built quality compared to other smartphones under 10000 rupees. Since its screen size is 4.5 inches, it snuggingly fits in your hands. Even the camera takes decent shots with nicer details. Though the phone won’t stand out. And wouldn’t win any brownie point in the design department. But great for people who need all-in-one smartphone; sans phablet screen size and latest Android OS.”

#3 Micromax Canvas A120 Colors
Touted as the successor to the ever popular Micromax Canvas 2 A110. Micromax has now come up with Canvas 2 A120 Colors with beefed up specs and design under 10000 rupees.
To tell the truth, I’ve literally lost count of how many Micromax smartphones are out there and that too the smartphones under 10000 rupees mark. I thought they’d be joking when Micromax said it was going to release new Canvas smartphones every month. But unfortunately they weren’t. They’re trying Samsung’s strategy of carpet bombing; thereby releasing new phones frequently and hoping one of its smartphone makes it huge. Really!
Leaving this all behind, Micromax Canvas 2 A120 Colors caught my sight (except the humongous name). At first encounter, the phone felt a lot sturdier than any other budget Micromax smartphones under 10000 rupees I’ve used. Even the innards of the phone are an amazing addition. It features a 1.2GHz Quad Core Mediatek MT6582 chipset along with 1GB RAM. The best part about Micromax Canvas 2 A120 Colors is its bright HD screen. The display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and pixel density of 295ppi.
The phone runs on Android 4.4.2 and lot of cutomization is done to the UI by Micromax. I’m personally not a fan of this custom UI but is a nice addition to its arsenal. The A120 even borrows a lot of nifty tricks from Micromax Canvas Turbo A250 like, blow to unlock, proximity unlock, proximity call receive, video pop-out, flip to silent, flip to turn speaker phone on and a lot more. But such sort of customization does takes up a lot of RAM size. With only 50% of RAM usage available to the user after installing some apps from Play Store.
The camera on Micromax Canvas 2 Colors A120 is 8MP and is much better than 8MP cameras featured on any other budget. You could get decent snaps from this camera and with decent details. But then expecting a decent low-light photography should be out of your thoughts. Whereas the front camera is 2MP from which you shouldn’t expect a lot at this price.
Other features includes 8GB ROM (0.98 GB available for Apps), Expandable storage upto 32GB, Bluetooth Version 4, 2000mAh battery and USB OTG support. You can see Micromax Canvas 2 A120 Color Benchmarks scores by clicking here.
“Micromax Canvas 2 A120 is probably the only smartphone under 10000 rupees to come with HD display. Even the built quality is much better compared to its counterparts. Though it does comes with little niggles like less battery life, occasional lags and users even complained of over heating during charging or calling. But still the Micromax Canvas has a lot of features going for it like Quad Core CPU, 1GB RAM and HD display along with new design and is a lot sturdier.”
Inside the box: Micromax Canvas 2 A120 Color Handset, 2 Extra Colored Back Panels, Charger, USB cable, Earphones and User manuals.
#2: Motorola Moto E
Currently Flipkart is the only vendor of Moto E in India. I personally haven’t used Moto E. But from all hands-on and reviews out there. Moto E looks like the best low-budget smartphone.
It features a 1.2 GHz Dual Core Snapdragon 200 Chipset along with 1 GB RAM. It even includes Adreno 302 GPU. Moto E has 4.3 inch display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. This clocks the pixel density at 256ppi. Impressive for a low-budget smartphone. The display is water-splash resistant and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 which is an excellent preposition for a smartphone under 10000 rupees.
Front camera is absent in Moto E. While the primary camera is 5MP sans auto-focus. So do not expect it to shoot even decent pictures. And image clarity is out of expectation. While the body is strongly built and Motorola touts Moto E to be smartphone for everyone. This is what Moto E ad looks like.
Another amazing features includes a 1980mAh battery along with Android Kitkat 4.4.2 with the latest kernel. And Motorola promises to deliver every other Android update for Moto E. This makes it an irresistible offer. Currently Moto E is available only from Flipkart in India. And the handset is out of stock. Moto E might clock impressive sales I must say.
“Motorola Moto E is definitely the smartphone for the masses. The dual-core CPU gives performance that to of a quad-core CPU. So playing high-end games won’t be a problem on this smartphone under 10000. Even on a low-budget it comes with 1 GB RAM. And includes Gorilla Glass 3 which is only seen in high-end smartphones. Not water-proof but Moto E is splash resistant and can survive Monsoon without hiccups. Though the camera is a downer and the battery is non-removable. And since the smartphone is priced under 10000 rupees; makes it a very great offer.”
Inside the Box: Moto E handset, Wall Charger, Earphones, User Manual in Regional and English language.

Thank You for sharing this article. Here’s the smartphone on #1 position.
#1: Asus Zenfone 5 8GB
Previous Asus smartphones weren’t able to make the buzz as the Zenfone has created. To be true, it holds its own unique position in the market. If you are surprised by Asus Zenfone 5’s inclusion in the 1st place. I’ll give you enough reasons why you shouldn’t be.
Asus Zenfone 5 features a 1.6 GHz Dual Core Intel Atom Z2560 Processor with Intel Hyper Threading Technology chipset. This chipset has 4 threads which means the processor has 4 CPU’s of 800MHz each soldered inside two cores. The best part is it offers 2GB RAM which isn’t available in any phone in this price bracket. It has an internal memory of 8GB and can be expanded to 64 GB via micro SD card.
The screen size is 5 inch with a resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels (294ppi) protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The phone weighs at 145 grams which makes it compact and easy to use. It features a 2MP camera in the front whereas has a 8MP camera at the back which can take very detailed snaps in bright and florescent light. Compared to any other smartphones under 10000 in the list, Asus Zenfone 5 has the best camera (No-doubt in that).
On software front, you get Android Jellybean 4.3 OS and is upgradeable to Android Kitkat 4.4 OS. This makes the deal a lot sweeter.
Asus Zenfone 5 features a PowerVR SGX 544 MP2 GPU which gives great performance in gaming. It also has Zen UI on top of Android Jellybean 4.3 which brings in apps like What’s Next, Do It Later, Omlet Chat, PixelMaster, Zen Link, and Open Cloud.
Asus Zenfone 5 also features PixelMaster Imaging Technology which helps in clicking vivid pictures. As per my experience, the camera only over saturates the images which makes it look vivid.
Asus Zenfone 5 has a shiny plastic part below the capacitive button which does looks like metal but it isn’t. Though not required but it gives an exclusivity to already identical and boring looking Android Smartphones. The back panel is curved on the edges. This makes it easy to hold. The built quality is superior, while the back panel is all plastic; has a solid grip.
“I certainly would suggest Asus Zenfone to anyone who needs a best smartphone under 10000 rupees. Great in terms of design, Asus Zenfone 5 has unique look compared to usual crop of Android Smartphones. And Zen UI design also looks fresh. The hardware and software are strongly binded together. Also compared to other Android Smartphones, there are no bloatwares in Asus Zenfone 5. Though available only at Flipkart right now, if you’re in need of a great smartphone under 10000 im terms of hardware, design and a good brand Asus Zenfone 5 it is.”
Inside the box: Asus Zenfone 5 Handset, USB cable, Wall Charger, Standard Earphones, Battery, User Manual.
I certainly believe you would have liked the list. And you would have unlocked the First Position. I’ve tried my best to include the best smartphone in this price sensitive segment.
If you do have any complains about the list, make sure you leave a comment below. Or any other smartphone you believe should have fit the bill? Let me know. And don’t forget to share.
Have a great day!
