A Lesser Know Trick To Rename Your Processor in 5 Minutes

    Categories: Computer

Hey! Did you ever felt like renaming your processor? Like Renaming an Intel Pentium Dual Core to probably an Intel Core i7. Or do you even doubt that there’s a way to do this? Definitely you’d have this question; I too had it. Though being in computer business for past 5 years; I didn’t know to do it. Such a shame! So I left the thought, thinking one just couldn’t do it. Well, Thank God! I was wrong, and you could actually rename your processor. The best thing is; you don’t even need any external software to do it, this can be done right using your Windows Operating System. But still there’s one more question to answer.

Why do I need to Rename my Processor?

Well you can rename your processor Just for Fun. You can go to a friend’s house and change his Processor name to play a prank on him. If I knew this trick in my school days, I might have changed the name of every PCs Processor in our computer lab. But to tell the truth, there really isn’t any practical use for this trick. But still worth knowing.

And I’ll let you know how to do this in the quickest way possible. Ready?

Lets Start!

Step I – Open your Registry Editor

  • You need to open Registry Editor on Windows.

How to do that?

Steps to opening Registry Editor are a little different in Windows XP, 7 and 8.

Opening Registry editor in:
Windows XP

  • Click Start button; hit on Run and type in regedit. Hit Enter.

Windows 7

  • Click Start button; and type regedit in search box. Hit Enter.

Windows 8

  • Press Windows key + R and type regedit in Run command window and hit Enter.
Small tip: You can open Run command window by pressing Windows key + R in any version of Windows. If any Confirmation Box pops up; ignore it and click OK

Step II – Find the file to change your Processor Name

Towards the left of Registry Editor, you’ll see a list of folders. Follow the navigation shown below.

  • Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder; click on the ‘+’ sign next to it.
  • Choose Hardware folder; click on the + sign.
  • Expand Description folder.
  • Now you need to select System folder and expand it.
  • Expand the CentralProcessor folder and click on 0.

Step III – Now Rename your Processor

After selecting the ‘0’ folder look at the right side of Registry Editor window, you’ll see a list of files. Double click on the ProcessorNameString; a small window will open. Delete the existing name and type the name of the processor you’d like to be seen in your System Properties.

In this screenshot, I visited Intel’s website and renamed my AMD A8-3870 APU with Intel Core i7-4550U.

Open System Properties to check it.

Now Right click on My Computer icon and select Properties to see the changed name.

This trick is only for fun purposes and to play prank. Do not use it to fool your customer or client. AllTechTrix.com does not support such practices because 3rd party software can easily detect the original processor name.

Can I check Original Processor Name?

Various 3rd party softwares exists which can enlist the complete configuration of your system. And most importantly the original name of the Processor too.

Below is one such software called as CPU-Z to help you do so. With CPU-Z, you can not only check your Processor details but also details regarding your Motherboard, RAM and Graphic Card.

I’d again request readers to use this trick just for fun or to play prank; do not use it to fool customers while selling your 2nd hand computer system or so.
